MiffyHistory

Miffy was “born” in 1955. During a holiday in Egmond aan Zee, Dick Bruna tells his eldest son Sierk a story every night before bed about a white rabbit running around in the garden of the holiday home. This rabbit becomes the inspiration for Miffy. Whilst father Dick sits drawing, Miffy appears on the paper. As he enjoys drawing a dress more than a pair of trousers, he turns Miffy into a girl. In the early years, Miffy looks like a soft toy, with somewhat chunky ears. From 1963, when the books were published in square format, she looked like the Miffy we still recognise today. She looks stubbornly at the reader with her black eyes, has two narrow, pointed ears and beautiful chubby cheeks. From the book Miffy’s Dream (1979) onwards, her ears and face become rounder and more balanced. Apart from the fact that her body also becomes a little rounder and chubbier, as for example in “Miffy in the Tent” (1995), not much changes in these years. Only in 2001 does the relationship between her head and her body change slightly in “The Ghost Miffy” and she looks a little more like a toddler. Since the arrival of a baby in ‘little fluff’ (2003), Miffy has been a real toddler rabbit big sister.

popular

Miffy is the best known and most popular of the characters in Dick Bruna’s books worldwide. He has also written the most books about her (more than 30). She appeals to children all over the world and gives them a warm and cosy feeling of security. Many children recognise themselves in Miffy and her adventures. She is uncomplicated and innocent, positive and open to new experiences.

MiffyName

The name ‘Miffy’ is derived from rabbit. For anyone who speaks Dutch, this is a very logical name, but abroad it’s different. Because the word ‘rabbit’ is different in all languages and because ‘Miffy’ is very difficult to pronounce in many other countries, our Miffy has been given a different name abroad. One that has no special meaning, but is easy to pronounce in all languages: Miffy. Miffy used to have a different name in every country (for example ‘le petit lapin’ in France and ‘kleintjie’ in South Africa), but since 1996 she has been called ‘Miffy’ everywhere outside the Netherlands.
