The hedgehog as a
lawmaker
When a hedgehog hears or sees something unexpected, it raises the spines on its head by pulling back its shoulders and keeping its snout down. If the situation becomes threatening, the hedgehog retracts its legs and curls up into a ball. It only needs three seconds to curl up. The head, legs and tail then point inwards. This spiky ball offers good protection against natural enemies. Once it has curled up, the spines point in all directions thanks to tiny skin muscles at the ends of the spines. The hedgehog is then only vulnerable at the opening on the underside, which is very small, however, and only a few animals can attack it there without being stung. Once the danger has been averted, it unrolls again, which also takes about three seconds. It then rushes to a hiding place, sniffing loudly. Studies on hedgehog behaviour have found that hedgehogs use poisonous, irritating and strong-smelling substances such as tobacco, soap, faeces and the skin of poisonous toads to lubricate their spines.
The most important natural enemies are probably the badger and the polecat. Pine martens, foxes, dogs, lynxes, wild boars and birds of prey such as goshawks, golden eagles and eagle owls also occasionally catch hedgehogs. However, the main cause of death is starvation during hibernation and, in urban areas, road traffic. At the natural end of life, life expectancy is four to seven years, with a maximum of up to 10 years.
